MotoMate

On the App Store it is called PocketMotoMate, because the name MotoMate was already taken; on your home screen it is MotoMate.

MotoMate keeps every motorcycle you look after in one place on your iPhone — the paperwork, the upkeep, the running costs and the rides — and tells you before anything runs out. It is the sister app to Car Portfolio, made for bikes. Version 1.0.0 is being tested on TestFlight at the moment and is not in the App Store yet.

Every bike gets its own card. The registration, make and model, with the MOT, tax, insurance, breakdown and service dates underneath, each marked in date or expired, and what is due next at the top. Mark one bike with a star and the ride logger picks it unless you choose another. Every other screen sits on a carousel at the foot of the dashboard, in the order you choose in Settings: swipe to turn it, tap to open.

The dates that matter. Enter an MOT test date and the expiry follows, keeping the same anniversary if the bike was tested in the month before, and the app tells you the first day the next test can be done. Insurance, with the insurer, policy, cover and named riders, and vehicle tax each have their own record, and renewing starts from last year’s details. Reminders go off a month before, a week before and on the day, and before each service is due. They are set on your phone; nothing is sent from a server.

The upkeep and what it costs. The pre-ride check — oil, chain, tyres, brake fluid, coolant, lights and horn, controls, brake pads and lines — with when each was last looked at and a photo if you want one. Every service, repair and oil change, and when the next one is due by date or by miles. Tyre sizes and pressures front and rear, and every tread check. Every fill-up, with MPG between full tanks, cost per mile and the month’s spend. Scan the V5C, MOT certificates, insurance schedules and receipts, with the edges found and each page squared up, or bring in a PDF from Files, filed by bike.

The rider. Your licence and its categories — AM, A1, A2 and A — and when each was passed, with a reminder before the photocard needs renewing. Scan the licence and it is read on the phone.

The rides. Log a ride by GPS — personal, business or commute — with the phone in its mount. The bike’s mileage moves on, every ride is kept in Routes with its distance, moving time and average speed, and Stats shows the odometer over time and the tax year’s business miles at HMRC’s approved rate for motorcycles. Two phones close together can share bikes and their records with each other directly, encrypted, without going through anybody’s server.

Everything stays on your phone in an encrypted database. Location is used only while a ride you started is being logged. There is no advertising or analytics code, and a PIN, Face ID or Touch ID can lock the app.

Free, and what a subscription unlocks

The things that keep a bike on the road are free: my bikes, the MOT, the maintenance check, the rider profile, the calendar, the reminders, ride tracking and sharing with another phone.

A MotoMate Full Access subscription unlocks the rest — insurance, tax, service, tyres, fuel, documents, stats, the full ride history in Routes, and notes. It comes in two lengths, monthly and quarterly, and renews until you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the period.

  • Monthly See the App Store renews every month
  • Quarterly See the App Store renews every three months

Prices are not listed here, because they can change. Check the App Store for the up-to-date price, in your own currency, before you subscribe — it is the App Store that takes the payment. Most of the apps give new subscribers an introductory offer: an introductory period at the start, before the first payment is taken. How long it lasts can change, so again, check the App Store for the details.

Manage or cancel the subscription from Manage subscription in the app, or in your App Store account settings.

The one piece of personal information involved is your email address, held so the subscription can be recognised as yours. See the privacy policy and the terms of use.

Every screen in the app

Ten screens, three at a time — swipe, or use the arrows and dots. Tap a screenshot to see it full size. The apps are still being developed, so screens may look different in the version you download — these shots are not always updated the moment something changes.
